Bob Trammell calls out Governor Kemp on Redistricting

LUTHERSVILLE, GA – Bob Trammell, Democratic candidate for Georgia Attorney General, issued the following statement today in response to Governor Brian Kemp’s call for a special legislative session to redraw Georgia’s electoral maps:

"There is nothing routine about this session; it is an emergency attempt to lock in partisan power through the systemic dilution of minority voices.

Georgia Republicans are operating on a desperate premise. They think they can gerrymander their way out of accountability. But they are missing a fundamental truth: The harder they squeeze the electorate, the more the state slips through their fingers. Every time they try to silence a community or redraw a line to protect an incumbent, they only succeed in further energizing a public that is hungry for fairness, responsive government, and the rule of law.

The office of the Georgia Attorney General is the front line of defense for our democracy. We can no longer afford an Attorney General who uses taxpayer dollars to defend discriminatory maps and justify the unconscionable power grab of an increasingly desperate and out-of-touch Trump Republican party.

That is why, as your Attorney General, I have pledged that my first act will be to establish a dedicated Voting Rights Division. We will proactively build the case, seek judicial review, and use every legal tool in the arsenal to stop the intentional dilution of Black political power in Georgia.

The forces of voter suppression have been exacerbated, but as the people’s lawyer, I will be the shield that protects voting rights and democratic participation for every Georgian."
